education was a way out. i will tell my own family's story. i am third-generation college educated. why is that often mark because my grandfather -- why is that? when my grandfather was a young man in alabama, he decided he was going to get a college education so he asked how a colored man to go to college, 1919. it told about a college 30 miles away. he said of his cotton, went off to college, pay for his first year. he asked how anyone else was going to college. they said he had eight -- he they have scholarships. they were presbyterian ministers. my grandfather said that is exactly what i have in mind. our family had in college educated and presbyterian ever since. he knew about that transforming power of education. the wonderful part of the story is that out of eutaw, alabama, in 2 generations, the secretary of state, his granddaughter. that's access to education, and as i talked about, the impediments i faced in my life to education and how impossible it would have been for me or my siblings, for that matter, to go to college without pell grantses and student loans. the social changes that occurred in the country. you can't separate economic well being of people from their social well being. a cause is lack of preparedness is the fact kids in america are raised by single parents, sometimes a grandmother in a dangerous neighborhood in sub standard housing, poor nutrition, no primary health care, and schools failing. they will struggle. they don't have after school activities because parents ceabt afford the fees or get out of work to take them. can you succeed? there's heroic single parents doing amazing things, and they will tell you it is hard. yet, we can't be the country we need to be if we don't address that. government can have a role in that, but, ultimately, civil society has a bigger role. support that, address that, recognize it, and talk about it. we have not done enough of that in the free enterprise, limi

we should not cut access to higher education. in my state, we have seen cutting of higher education. how will that help pennsylvania? how will we track the companies if we do not have a skilled work force? we need to deal with that and make sure we are helping them get a basic education. push our schools to do better, even our finest public schools. my district has lots of good schools and some that are struggling. even the wealthiest school districts rely on the federal district to help them with the poorest students. that starts at an early age. we have families who are earning family incomes of $50,000 who send their kids to college. how do they do that? where is the income to do that? without grants and loans? use some of our tax policy to incentivize the advance manufacturing. the manufacturers that are growing are the ones that are doing advanced manufacturing. use the computers, robotics, a bit of technology being used. to do manufacturing right now is not what it used to be. you need to have math and computer skills and g
